Is Hawaii a good place to live?

Here is the Hawaii vacation scenario which happens again and again, whether it's for first time visitors to Hawaii or those who are spending frequent vacations in Hawaii: You sit in a jacuzzi at a fancy Hawaii beach resort and the question 'Is Hawaii a good place to live?' appears naturally. If you are lucky, there will be a few Hawaii residents who can answer that question for you and even give you some specific information about the costs of private schools, electric bills for running AC, median housing prices and more. Lucky you! Sometimes this is already the end to your Hawaiian dream of living in Hawaii.

Living in Hawaii
Here is Best Hawaii Vacation's blog answer to 'Is Hawaii a good place to live?'. What a question! Of course, Hawaii is one of the most beautiful places to live on this earth with:

- warm weather all year round
- warm waters of the Pacific Ocean attract surfers, divers, swimmers...
- abundance of tropical flowers, plants and fruits
- white sand beaches and so much more.

We say 'There is no place like Hawaii'!

What you should Do before moving to Hawaii

However, if you want to enjoy all these wonderful things which make people want to move to Hawaii for good, it takes commitment and dedication and the right attitude.
1.
Do your homework with research on all the Hawaiian islands. Best island to start out with is Oahu, as it has public transportation, lots of jobs and yet nice beaches.
2.
Stay in touch with Hawaii through daily reading online publications of Hawaii newspapers. Pay close attention to classifieds in regards to job offers and sharing rooms. Don't forget Craiglist Hawaii in your resources for Living in Hawaii.
3.
Don't rely on other people, even if they are your friends. They might be able to provide you with advice but you got to determine what you want.
4.
Make sure that you have housing and job lined up, before you go to Hawaii.
5.
Good idea before moving to Hawaii, try a longer vacation on the island of your choice and talk to as many locals as possible.

Even if you have done all the necessary preparations, be aware that Hawaii is not for everybody to move and live there for good. Hawaii has the biggest fluctation rate in the states. Young people often get 'island fever' but guess what, if you lived in Hawaii for 2 years and after that you move back to the Mainland, it will be probably the most adventurous years of your life. And you can say 'I lived in Hawaii'!

Yes, Hawaii is a wonderful place to live! With the right preparation, you can do it too. Hope our Hawaii Moving Tips come handy. Aloha, Pua Hawaii Vacations

Scuba diving and snorkeling on a regular basis or even just on the weekends when it's 'Aloha Friday - No Work till Monday' is definitely one of the big pleasures one can enjoy when living in sunny Hawaii.

As someone who lives in Hawaii for six months of the year, as part of my employment --- oh yah! I am lucky -- I can't imagine a better place to live!

Thank you for asking this question allowing me to voice my joy at being able to live in Paradise.

You are really lucky, Kim. Normally, it's the independently wealthy who can afford to have a vacation home or condo in Hawaii and thus take advantage of the best of both worlds: enjoy the soothing tropical climate during the winter months in Hawaii and get the best of summer season on the Mainland.

Hawaii is the best place for vacation trip & it might be great to live also.

That's so true, Eileen. Most everybody who falls in love with Hawaii on vacation, would also like to live there.

If at all possible, try to spend your vacation in an area you are thinking of living in. We moved to Upper Puna on the Big Island and had no idea it would be so rainy and damp!!

Totally agree. Best idea is to vacation or rent in the area where you intend to live in Hawaii. Big Island has about 11microclimates, which means the weather can be totally different within 3 miles.

Please don’t listen to anyone, who actually hasn’t been to Hawaii.
People have this idea about it that isn’t actually true.
The cost of houses and stuff is actually pretty high here but jobs are easier to find than most places. And I am guessing food is like any other place. We are pretty much the same; it may be a tad higher since everything needs to be shipped to us but really doesn’t make a difference. There’s not really a lot of hustle and bustle here. Good for the laidback person who like the beach. Other than that there’s nothing really to do.

Mahalo Adnan for joining our comments on Is Hawaii a good place to live?

Speaking of plentiful job offers in Hawaii, one has to emphasize that available jobs are mostly in the Hawaii hotel and tourist industry.

Best chances to get a job fast in Hawaii is definitely in Honolulu on Oahu.

Yes, research for house rental or purchase and job security are major issues to take care of before moving the entire family to Hawaii.

With the right commitment and dedication, living in Hawaii can become reality. The love for the islands will double your efforts!

There are only a few places where you can say after work 'Let's go to the beach!'.

Every place in the world has its own beauty. Some love to go hills, some love to visit landscapes, some love traveling, and some love beach. Everyone has their own tastes they may differ from others. Hawaii may be a good place to pay a visit.

Albert, you are so right. Tastes and preferences of people are different, which is good.

Otherwise, I guess, most everybody would want to live in Hawaii where it's always nice and warm and one can even go swimming in winter.
