THE WHALES ARE STILL HERE.THEY ARE MAGNIFICIENT. YOU CAN SEE THEM FROM THE COAST OR THE BOAT. YOU CAN ALSO SWIM WITH DOLPHINES.

Yes, you are so right, Diana. The whales mostly hang out in the Hawaiian waters all the way into March - just perfect for your Spring vacation in Hawaii - before they are heading back north to Alaska again.
But no worries the wild dolphins and all our tropical fish and rays are permanent 'residents' at Kealakekua Bay. Plus there are plenty of white sand beaches on the sunny Kohala Coast to take off for snorkeling or diving!
A vacationer told me today she was snorkeling and saw an octopus....They were both surprised. She was snorkeling off Puako...

Having lived in Hawaii for so many years and having snorkeled the Kohala Coast many times but I must admit I never saw an octupus. Whoa!
Encounters with spotted eagle rays have been really special to me. Eagle rays are extremely shy and one has to know the right spot on the Kohala Coast where to find them.
Here is my tip for visitors: Park your car at Mauna Lani Bay Hotel parking lot (all the way to the left!) and walk from there to the Mauna Lani Beach Club. These waters have an abundance of tropical fish + eagle rays. BTW: all beaches are public in Hawaii.
We were at various Kohala coast beaches yesterday and the whales were really prominent and playful-lots of breaches, lots of tail flapping...Watching them filled me with a sense of awe. Aloha, Marie
Let's hope for all our Big Island visitors that the whales will still hang out in Hawaiian waters all the way into spring break.

Pua, I really like your comments about the affordability of vacation homes. People are getting much wiser now about choosing vacation rentals over expensive hotels. That way they can save their money for some of the fun activities there are to do in Hawaii. Amazingly to us, every second person we meet over here in Kihei Maui is from Canada. So even with the Canadian dollar being so depressed right now, they are still coming to Hawaii. It is because they are very smart to rent from an owner instead of staying in an expensive hotel. This makes up for the $ difference so they can still experience a great vacation in Maui. Aloha to you and I hope you have fun on the Big Island next week.
Yes, Julie more and more Hawaii tourists - not just from Canada but equally from the states too - book a fully equipped vacation rental for their Hawaii vacation.
The free amenities which come with a private rental plus the customized, personal service by their Hawaiian hosts really outweigh nice things like a pool or jacuzzi which come with a hotel stay.
Good thing that the Pacific Ocean and those lovely beaches are available and accessible to all Hawaii visitors on any of our beautiful islands!
