I've been preparing for my Hawaii trip since last month and I'm very excited to go there. This is going to bt my first time; first time to ride a plane, first time to go out on a beach vacation, and first time to be with my whole family. Super excited!!!

Though I don't know which island you'll be visiting with your entire family - beach vacation is either Kihei on Maui or Kohala Coast on the Big Island - make yourself knowledgeable what else you can do on your precious Hawaii vacation.

Is it best to find a travel agent that is experienced in Hawaii travel or can one book things on their own with proper research?

Good question. Honestly, I wouldn't know the percentage who still book a trip to Hawaii through a travel agent.
My guess it's about 10% which I think are the elderly who just don't feel that comfortable with finding all the necessary trip information like best flights to Hawaii, car rental specials - only island one can really get around by bus being Oahu, Honolulu - and of course, booking a hotel or a private vacation rental by owner.
Well, experienced travelers also take advantage of Expedia and Travelocity vacation packages and combine those with own Hawaii travel research. Best way to go.
